Should I Hit or Stand In Blackjack?

Our team knows that party planning in New York should include great card games like blackjack. Blackjack is a game of strategy and decisions that will determine if a player wins or loses. The most important decision is whether to hit or stand. The objective of this card game is to hit a number of 21 or below, but also beat the dealer’s cards.

One of the other names for blackjack is 21, since going over this number will mean losing no matter what the dealer’s cards show.

Card Points

Playing blackjack, the cards go by the associated number with the exception of face cards which have a value of 10. Aces can be worth either 1 or 11 giving the player some room to reach 21.

The card game begins with two cards dealt, which means a player can use an ace in combination with the other card and reach 21 without taking any more cards. If the card is a low number they can take more cards if they have an ace without fear since it can be counted as one.

Hit in Blackjack

Taking a hit at blackjack means getting another card from the dealer to try and improve the hand and should not be used to get closer to 21 unless the hand is worth a low number. The player risks getting a face card, a 7, 8 or 9 that could put them over the top number. Instead, the better strategy is if the hand is near 18 to stand.

Stand in Blackjack

Deciding to stand in blackjack means not taking hits or getting more cards and there are two reasons for this. One reason to stand is the player knows their cards reach a number that is either 21 or close and believe their hand will beat the dealer. Another reason is because they have a higher number and the dealer’s card that is showing is a low number.

What Blackjack Players Need to Know

Blackjack players need to remember two things:

  • Blackjack is a mathematical card game because it is based on mathematical principles that do not change.
  • The dealer in this game has rules. These include if the dealer has 16 or less they must hit, which means take another card. If they have 17 or more the dealer must stand.

Knowing these two rules allows the player to form a strategy based on their cards each hand to reach a hand worth more than the dealer.
